The Catalog of Life is a project that is attempting to catalog every known species on the earth. It just hit its millionth entry. 3,000 biologists from international organizations are working together on this. From an article in the Denver Post, April 9th, 2007: “Only rarely is there competition among names, such as occurred with sea anemones, hard corals and spiders, and occasionally an element of subjective opinion plays a role among the peer reviewers with various taxonomic expertise.” I say, “All hail, catalogers” and I hope this effort will allow some measure of conservation of the endangered species we still have left.
