Donation to Chicano Movement Collection

Freddie “Freak” Trujillo signed a Deed of Gift to begin the donation of his Colorado Chicano Movement collection to the University Archives at a reception at the University Library on Monday evening.

Mr. Trujillo’s generous gift will be an important part of the Southern Colorado Ethnic Heritage and Diversity Archives, a project undertaken by the University Archives designed to collect, preserve and make accessible the records, papers and manuscripts of the individuals, families and organizations of the varied racial, ethnic and cultural groups of Pueblo and Southern Colorado. The initial phase of the program has been generously funded by a grant from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.

Hispanic Heritage Month Kick-off Reception

Building on last year’s wonderful series of events to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, the University again has many things planned between September 15 and October 15.

The first event will be Monday afternoon, September 15, from 4:30 to 6:30 on the Library First Floor. Not only will we have great food and great company, but we will be celebrating the first donation to the Library’s new Colorado Chicano Movement Archives! Freddy “Freak” Trujillo and Deborah Espinosa will be speaking about the Chicano Movement and portions of Freddy’s collection will be on display.

Following this, the Second Annual Hispanic Experience Literary Showcase Reading will take place in the First-Year Center on the Library’s 2nd floor.

Finally, Adrian Montoya, artist,  will display a collection of retablos, small oil paintings on tin, zinc, wood or copper which esteem a multiplicity of Catholic saints.  Adrian learned the art form from classes he took at the community college in Las Vegas New  Mexico, studying under Luna Community College.

We hope you will join us in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. Refreshments will be served!

Renovation Update from the Dean of Library Services

Contrary to the story in the Chieftain a couple of weeks ago, I am being assured by the Administration that the library renovation project is still going forward. The Board of Governors staff is telling us that the funding mechanism for our project is secure and we should not worry. I am, therefore, cautiously optimistic that all is well. In the meantime, we are moving forward with our project.
Alain Dalmau has been hired as the project manager to represent the University’s interests and coordinate both the move and the planning and construction. At this time, we hope to vacate all or part of the building by spring semester. This will likely happen in a phased approach to allow IT to handle the complexity of moving all the computers in this building. Alain is working with Facilities to develop a space plan that will guide our move and identify appropriate spaces on campus for everyone in the Library building.
At this time, I don’t know where we will end up but our goal is to keep the essential Library services available on campus. I and your department’s library liaison will continue to let you know the latest news as soon as we can. We will be working with you to ensure that you retain access to all resources you need. Wherever we are located, we anticipate remaining there until spring semester of 2011!

You will also have opportunities to provide feedback on the design of the library as the final plans are created. We have selected the architectural firm of Bennett, Wagner, and Grody http://www.bwgarchitects.com/ to create the final design of the building. This firm is very excited about our project and I am very confident in them. They have extensive experience with both higher education in Colorado and with library design.

As we progress through the steps of this process, I will continue to provide the campus with updates. In addition, to find information on the latest news, check our website. We will have news and announcements about the renovation on our main page.
