ACRL Scholarly Communications Road Show – Southern Colorado
From Understanding to Engagement
Wednesday, May 9, 2012, 9:30a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Program Description
The goal of the program is to empower participants to help accelerate the transformation of the scholarly communication system. Participants will engage in a structured interactive program that explores scholarly publishing, author rights and open access in practice.
Four modules focus on:
- New methods of scholarly publishing and communication
- Copyright and author rights
- Economics
- Open access and openness in practice
The all-day workshop (May 9, 9:30-5:00) will help participants in very practical ways, such as: prepare for library staff or faculty outreach (i.e., working with faculty on publication agreements, interacting in their roles as liaisons, and developing programming for faculty and/or graduate students), contextualize collection development decisions to internal and external stakeholders, and initiate or support new models for scholarly communication in their libraries.
Learning Objectives
Participants will:
- Enhance understanding of the scholarly communication matrix as a system to manage the results of research and scholarly inquiry.
- Increase their ability to examine, initiate, or support new models of scholarly communication (i.e., research & social interaction models such as blogs, new ways of peer review).
- Select and cite key principles, facts, and messages relevant to their own scholarly communication plans and programs (current or nascent).
- Identify concrete actions that they may take back to their institutions to help accelerate the transformation of the scholarly communication system.
Who Should Attend
The workshop is appropriate for those with administrative responsibilities, with new leadership assignments in scholarly communication, repository services, or digital publishing, as well as liaisons and any others who are seeking to advance their professional development in scholarly communication.
Presenters
Molly Keener is the Scholarly Communication Librarian at Wake Forest University, providing consultation and education services on copyright, author rights, Open Access, and funder public access policy compliance. She manages faculty scholarship collections in the institutional repository; supports library faculty with fulfillment of their Open Access policy; administers the University’s Open Access Fund for publication support; works with the Graduate School’s Electronic Theses & Dissertations program; serves as liaison to two academic departments; and, teaches an undergraduate information literacy course. In 2011, Keener was named an Emerging Leader by the American Library Association. She has a BA in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and earned her MLIS from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Sarah L. Shreeves is the Coordinator for IDEALS (http://www.ideals.illinois.edu/), the set of services and collections that support scholarly communication services at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Sarah also co-coordinates the Scholarly Commons (http://www.library.illinois.edu/sc/, a space that supports advanced research services in data access and management and the digital humanities among other things. She is responsible for working with faculty, students, and researchers on a range of scholarly communication issues including author rights, open access, and data curation. Sarah currently is a member of the Open Repositories Conference Steering Committee, serves on the faculty for the ACRL Scholarly Communications Roadshow (http://www.ala.org/acrl/issues/scholcomm/roadshow), and is on the steering committee for the DMP Tool (https://dmp.cdlib.org/). Sarah speaks and publishes regularly on scholarly communication issues as well as on the social and technical barriers to metadata interoperability. She has a BA in Medieval Studies from Bryn Mawr College, an M.A. in Children’s Literature from Simmons College, and an M.S. in Library and Information Science from Illinois. Cost
The program is subsidized by ACRL and Colorado State University – Pueblo Library and is FREE for attendees and will include your lunch. Places are limited so Register Now.
Logistics
The roadshow will take place on the Colorado State University – Pueblo campus in the Occhiato University Center Ballroom. Please park in the N-3 parking lot. If you need recommendations for lodging, please contact the Library Dean’s office at 719.549.2361. Note that lunch will be provided.

MLA Citation Workshops Offered at the Library
Keli Hibbert, Writing Room Coordinator, and Courtney Bruch, Library Instruction Coordinator, will be conducting student workshops and offering tips to make MLA citation simple. Free Citation Workshops at the Library
The library and the writing room will be conducting citation workshops on the following dates. The workshops are free and no reservations are necessary. All workshops will be held on the second floor of the library in room 214A.
